Routes and ports
Tarifa to Tangier Ville is the best choice for foot passengers. The ship arrives at the port in Tangier city, close to the medina. Baleària took over this route in May 2025, and AML also sails it.
Algeciras to Tanger Med is the main route for cars and trucks. Tanger Med is a large port about 30 km east of Tangier, so foot passengers need a taxi or bus to the city.
Algeciras to Ceuta and Malaga to Melilla go to Spanish cities on the African coast. Note that Ceuta and Melilla are Spain, and crossing from them into Morocco is a land border. The Motril to Tanger Med route stopped in October 2025.
Tickets and fares
Prices depend on the operator, season, and whether you bring a car. Summer and holiday weeks are the most expensive and busiest.
Some tickets can be changed for free up to 48 hours before departure. Read the fare conditions before you pay.
How to book
Book on the operator's website (Baleària, DFDS or AML) or at port ticket offices. Online check-in is often possible from 48 hours before departure.
Baleària runs a shuttle bus between Algeciras and Tarifa for its own Tarifa-Tangier passengers. It must be added to your booking. Check the timetable and price when booking.
Tips for travellers
Carry your passport and any visa needed for Spain (Schengen) and Morocco. Check the rules for your nationality before travel.
On Tarifa-Tangier sailings, get your passport stamped on board. Look for the police desk soon after departure, as queues form.
Drivers should arrive at least 90 minutes early. In July and August the ports are very busy with families driving home to Morocco, so expect long waits.
The Strait can be windy. Some sailings are cancelled or delayed in bad weather. Keep time spare for onward flights.
Last checked: October 2026. Fares and timetables change, so confirm on the official website before you travel.
