Before buying a travel eSIM, check two things: that your phone supports eSIM, and that it is not locked to one mobile operator.
The quickest test
Open your phone’s dialler and type *#06#. If you see a number labelled EID, your phone supports eSIM.
iPhone
- iPhone XS, XR and all newer models support eSIM.
- Go to Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular). If you see Add eSIM, you’re ready.
- To check the lock: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should say No SIM restrictions.
Android
- Many recent Samsung Galaxy (S20 and newer, Z Fold and Z Flip), Google Pixel (3 and newer) and other flagship phones support eSIM. Some models sold in certain countries don’t, even if the same model elsewhere does.
- Look in Settings → Connections → SIM manager (Samsung) or Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (Pixel) for an option to add an eSIM.
Locked phone?
Phones bought on a contract are sometimes locked. Ask your operator to unlock it before you travel — it is usually free once the contract is paid.
