An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a SIM card that is built into your phone. Instead of putting a small plastic card into the phone, you download your mobile plan — usually by scanning a QR code. Most phones made since 2019 have one.
How does a travel eSIM work?
You buy a data plan for the country you are visiting, receive a QR code by email, and add it to your phone. Your normal SIM stays in the phone, so you can still receive calls and SMS on your usual number (roaming charges from your own operator may apply to those), while the eSIM gives you mobile internet abroad.
Why travellers like eSIMs
- No roaming bills. You pay a fixed price for a set amount of data.
- Ready when you land. Install it at home, switch it on at arrival — no shop, no queue.
- Keep your number. Your WhatsApp and your home SIM keep working.
- Many countries. One shop covers more than 190 destinations.
Is there anything to watch out for?
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so for calls you use apps like WhatsApp. Also, an eSIM usually can’t be re-installed once deleted, so don’t remove it until your trip is over.
