On many European routes you can choose between a train and a long-distance bus. Neither is always better — it depends on your route, budget and time.
Choose the train when…
- Time matters. High-speed trains are much faster on routes like Paris–Lyon, Madrid–Barcelona or Milan–Rome.
- You want comfort. More space to walk around, work at a table, and use the café car.
- You arrive in the city centre. Main stations are usually right in the middle of town.
Choose the bus when…
- You’re on a budget. Buses are often the cheapest way between cities, especially when booked late.
- There’s no direct train. Buses sometimes go direct where the train needs changes.
- You travel overnight. A night bus saves you a hotel night.
Our tip
Compare both for the same day — prices change a lot by date and time. Search once and see trains and buses side by side.
