Network and main routes
Amtrak serves more than 500 stations. The Northeast Regional is its busiest route, with more than 50 trains a day linking Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, with branches to Springfield and to Virginia cities such as Richmond, Norfolk and Roanoke. New York to Washington takes about three and a half hours.
Long-distance trains cross the country over one or more nights. Examples are the California Zephyr from Chicago to Emeryville near San Francisco (about 52 hours), the Empire Builder, the Southwest Chief and the Coast Starlight.
Tickets and fares
Amtrak prices rise as trains fill up, so booking early is usually cheaper. Reservations are required on the Northeast Regional, which has Coach and Business Class.
Long-distance trains offer Coach seats and private sleeping rooms such as roomettes and bedrooms. Sleeper fares are much higher but include meals on many routes.
The USA Rail Pass costs $499 and gives 10 one-way segments within 30 days in Coach. You must start travelling within 120 days of buying it. Amtrak runs sales; in January 2026 it was sold for $250 for a few days.
How to book
Book on Amtrak.com, in the Amtrak app or at staffed stations. You must book each journey, including those on a rail pass, before you board.
Check fare rules before paying; cheaper fares have stricter change and refund conditions.
Tips for travellers
Each passenger may carry one personal item up to 25 lb and two carry-on bags up to 50 lb each. Where checked baggage is offered, two checked bags travel free. Extra or oversized carry-ons cost $20 each.
For long trips, bring snacks and a power bank, and expect delays on some long-distance routes. Sleeper rooms give privacy, which many families prefer.
In New York, trains use Penn Station (Moynihan Train Hall). In Washington, they use Union Station near the Capitol.
