Rail lines and buses
Metro Rail has six lines. The B and D lines are subways from Union Station; the B Line serves Hollywood. The A, C, E and K lines are light rail. The A Line runs about 58 miles from Long Beach to Pomona, and the E Line goes to Downtown Santa Monica.
On 8 May 2026 the D Line opened three new stations under Wilshire Boulevard: Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega. Further sections to Century City and Westwood are due before the 2028 Olympics. Metro also runs a large bus network that fills the gaps between rail lines.
Fares and caps
A ride costs $1.75, including transfers for two hours. You never pay more than $5 in a day or $18 in seven days when you pay by tapping.
Seniors 62 and over and riders with disabilities pay no more than $2.50 a day or $5 in seven days. Children under 6 can ride free with a paying adult. Cash on buses must be exact, and fare caps do not apply to cash.
How to pay
Use a TAP card, the TAP app, or tap a contactless credit or debit card or phone wallet on the reader. You can also add a TAP card to Apple Wallet.
Tap every time you board a bus or enter a rail station. Each rider needs their own card or device.
Tips and LAX
The LAX/Metro Transit Center opened in June 2025 on the C and K lines. A new airport people mover train to the terminals was due to open in late 2026; until it runs, shuttle buses link the transit centre and terminals. Check LAX's website for the current status.
Rail runs from about 5:00 to just before midnight. Plan late-night trips in advance.
Distances in LA are large. Combine rail with bus, and allow extra time for transfers.
