Cairo Metro

The Cairo Metro is the fastest way to cross Greater Cairo and avoid its traffic. Three lines serve the city centre, Giza, Heliopolis, Nasr City and the eastern suburbs. Fares are low and depend on how many stations you travel.

Routes and stations

Line 1 runs north–south from Helwan to El Marg El Gedida. Line 2 runs from Shubra El Kheima in Qalyubia to El Mounib in Giza, passing Tahrir and Giza.

Line 3 runs east–west from Adly Mansour to two western branches, Rod El Farag Corridor in Imbaba and Cairo University. It was completed in May 2024, except for a planned airport branch.

Al-Shohadaa (lines 1 and 2) is next to Ramses railway station. Line 3 meets line 1 at Nasser and line 2 at Attaba and Cairo University.

Tickets and fares

Tickets are priced by the number of stations travelled. New fares announced in March 2026 are LE10 for up to 9 stations, LE12 for up to 16, LE15 for up to 23 and LE20 for longer trips. The ministry did not give a firm start date, so check at the window.

Buy a single ticket at the station window or machine and keep it until you exit.

How to use it

Tell the cashier your destination station and they will charge the right zone. Follow signs by line colour and end station to find your platform.

Carry small notes, as queues at ticket windows can be long at peak times.

Tips for travellers

Each train has carriages reserved for women, usually in the middle; men should not board them. Rush hours are very crowded, so travel light if you can.

Use Adly Mansour to change to the LRT for the New Administrative Capital, and Cairo Stadium for the East Nile Monorail. For Giza trains and the pyramids area, use Giza station on line 2.

Line 1, opened in 1987, was the first metro line in Africa and the Arab world. Line 3 is the newest and has air-conditioned trains.

Last checked: October 2026. Fares and timetables change, so confirm on the official website before you travel.
