Routes and stations
LNER trains leave London King's Cross and run north via cities such as Peterborough, York and Newcastle to Edinburgh Waverley. Some trains continue to Aberdeen and other Scottish cities.
A new timetable from 14 December 2025 added more trains on the route, including an hourly fast service of about four hours ten minutes between London and Edinburgh. Most trains take around four hours twenty minutes.
Tickets and fares
Advance tickets are the cheapest and start from about £34 in Standard and £84 in First Class one way. They are only valid on the booked train and are not refundable.
LNER removed the flexible Super Off-Peak fare between London and Edinburgh in 2024. It sells a 70-minute flex Advance fare that lets you change to an LNER train up to 70 minutes either side of the booked one. A fully flexible Anytime single costs about £205. Fares change, so check before booking.
UK railcards, including Two Together and Family & Friends, give about one third off many LNER fares.
How to book
Book on the LNER website or app with no booking fee, or through other rail sellers. Advance fares usually open about 8 to 12 weeks before travel; book as soon as they appear for the lowest prices.
You can use an e-ticket on your phone or collect paper tickets from machines at the station. Seat reservations are often included.
Tips for travellers
First Class includes complimentary food and drinks at your seat, wider seats and lounge access at King's Cross and Edinburgh with a valid ticket. Alcohol is served, so ask staff if you want soft drinks only.
Sit on the right-hand side going north for views of the coast after Newcastle. Luggage racks are at the carriage ends.
Other options on the same line are Lumo, a low-cost operator with fewer trains, and the Caledonian Sleeper overnight train.
