Routes and stations
The line runs along the Marmara Sea coast on both sides of the city and dives under the Bosphorus. The immersed tunnel lies about 60 m below sea level, one of the deepest of its kind.
Trains run about every 8 minutes between Ataköy and Pendik and about every 15 minutes over the full Halkalı to Gebze route.
Marmaray connects with several metro lines and the Metrobus. Some high-speed YHT trains to Ankara and Konya also use the line, and international trains to Sofia leave from Halkalı.
Tickets and fares
Fares depend on distance. In February 2026 a short trip of 1 to 7 stations cost about 34 TL, and the longest trip about 75 TL. Fares rise often, so check before you travel.
You tap your Istanbulkart when entering and again when leaving, so the system can charge the right distance. Bank contactless cards work on most Istanbul transport but not on Marmaray.
How to use it
Buy an Istanbulkart and top it up at a machine in the station. One card can be used by several people, tapping once for each.
Follow the Marmaray signs inside connected metro stations. Check that you are on the right platform for your direction (Halkalı or Gebze).
Tips for travellers
Marmaray is crowded at rush hour. Families with large bags should avoid 7 to 9 am and 5 to 7 pm.
Trains do not run in the early morning hours, when the tunnel is used by freight.
It is a quick way to go from the old city to Üsküdar on the Asian side.
Remember to tap out, or you may pay the highest fare.
Last checked: October 2026. Fares and timetables change, so confirm on the official website before you travel.
