Routes and stations
The main line runs Istanbul to Ankara via Eskişehir. A second line runs from Ankara to Konya, and some trains go on to Karaman. A newer line links Ankara with Sivas.
In Istanbul, most trains use Söğütlüçeşme on the Asian side and Pendik further east. A few trains continue through the Marmaray tunnel to Bakırköy and Halkalı on the European side. They do not stop at Sirkeci.
Eskişehir is a common place to change between the Istanbul and Konya lines.
Tickets and fares
There are two classes: Economy and Business. Business includes a drink and a sandwich box. Velaro trains also have a small 4-seat compartment for a small extra charge.
Fares rise often because of inflation. After the August 2026 increase, Economy one-way fares were about 458 TL Ankara-Konya, 511 TL Ankara-Eskişehir, 639 TL Eskişehir-Istanbul, 990 TL Ankara-Istanbul and 1,442 TL Istanbul-Konya. Business costs more.
Return tickets and young travellers get discounts. Children have reduced fares. Check the current rules when booking.
How to book
Book on ebilet.tcddtasimacilik.gov.tr, which has an English version, or in the TCDD app. Booking usually opens 60 days ahead.
Foreign cards normally work. Enter your name and passport number exactly as in your passport. Show the ticket on your phone or printed.
Tips for travellers
Arrive 30 minutes early. Gates open about half an hour before departure, with a bag X-ray and ticket and passport check.
Luggage: one large bag up to 65 x 50 x 35 cm or two smaller bags. Oversized bags may pay a small fee at the gate.
The cafe car sells sandwiches and drinks but no alcohol, which suits many Muslim families. Many large stations in Turkey have a small prayer room (mescit).
Trains sell out on public holidays. Book early around Eid.
Last checked: October 2026. Fares and timetables change, so confirm on the official website before you travel.
