Istanbul Metro and Istanbulkart

The Istanbul Metro is a fast-growing network of rail lines on both sides of the city. One smart card, the Istanbulkart, pays for the metro, trams, buses, Metrobus, ferries and Marmaray. Knowing how it works saves time and money from your first ride at the airport.

Lines and stations

On the European side, the M2 line runs north to south through the city centre, and the M1A line goes to the old Atatürk Airport. On the Asian side, the M4 line runs from Kadıköy to Sabiha Gökçen Airport.

The M11 line links Istanbul Airport with the city. Lines connect with trams, Marmaray and the Metrobus at major interchanges. Check a current map, since new lines open often.

The Istanbulkart and fares

The Istanbulkart is a rechargeable card used on almost all public transport in the city. In February 2026 a full fare was 42 TL per ride.

If you change vehicles within the transfer time, the next rides cost less: about 31 TL for the first transfer, 24 TL for the second, and about 16 TL after that.

Paper single-use tickets cost much more, about 60 TL per ride. Fares rise often, so check current prices.

Where to buy and top up

Buy and top up the card at Biletmatik machines in stations and at ferry docks. Machines accept cash and often bank cards. Some kiosks also sell cards.

The Istanbulkart app lets you top up online with a bank card.

One card can pay for several people. Tap once for each person at the gate.

Tips for travellers

Contactless bank cards are accepted on most transport, but not on Marmaray. An Istanbulkart works everywhere.

Crossing between Europe and Asia by bus over the bridges costs more than a normal ride.

Avoid rush hours with large suitcases.

Large stations and shopping centres near the metro usually have prayer rooms (mescit).

Last checked: October 2026. Fares and timetables change, so confirm on the official website before you travel.
