Routes and stations
Swiss InterCity trains link the main cities such as Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern and Lucerne. Trains connect closely with buses, boats and mountain railways.
Famous panorama trains include the Glacier Express, Bernina Express and Gotthard Panorama Express. These need seat reservations, which may cost extra even with a pass.
Tickets and fares
The Swiss Travel Pass gives unlimited travel by train, bus and boat, and public transport in more than 90 towns and cities. It also gives free entry to more than 500 museums. Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos mountain trips are included, and many other mountains are up to 50% off.
The Swiss Half Fare Card costs CHF 150 for one month and gives 50% off train, bus and boat tickets and most mountain trips. It can be cheaper if you travel less.
Both are for people who live outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein. They can be bought up to 11 months ahead and come as e-tickets.
How to book
Buy single tickets on sbb.ch or the SBB Mobile app. Buy the Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card from official Swiss travel sales channels.
Ask for the free Swiss Family Card with your pass so children aged 6 to 15 travel free with you.
Tips for travellers
All InterCity double-deck trains have a family coach with a play area on the upper deck. Reserving seats there costs CHF 5 per person. Single-deck InterCity trains have family zones with tables and board games.
Trains with family coaches are marked in the SBB timetable and app. They run mainly on lines IC1, IC3, IC6, IC61 and IC8.
The lower deck of double-deck trains has space for pushchairs and large luggage.
Book panorama trains early in summer, as reservations are required.
