Munich U-Bahn & S-Bahn (MVV)

Munich's transport network is organised by MVV. MVG runs the U-Bahn, trams and city buses, and Deutsche Bahn runs the S-Bahn trains that also serve the airport. One ticket works on all of them, and the whole city is in zone M.

Routes and stations

The S-Bahn lines share one central tunnel through Hauptbahnhof, Karlsplatz (Stachus), Marienplatz and Ostbahnhof. The U-Bahn has eight lines (U1 to U8) and serves Odeonsplatz, Universität and the Allianz Arena (Fröttmaning, U6).

Marienplatz, in the old town, is served by both U-Bahn and S-Bahn and is the easiest central meeting point.

Tickets and fares

Inside the city you only need zone M. A single ticket costs €4.20 and a short trip €2.10. The single day ticket for zone M costs €10.10, and from 2026 children aged 6–14 travel free with it.

The group day ticket for zones M–5 costs €32.60 for up to five people and covers the airport, so it often suits families arriving by plane. The Airport-City-Day-Ticket covers the airport trip plus the rest of the day in zones M–5, valid until 6:00 the next morning.

The weekly IsarCard for zone M costs €23.80. MVV prices change every January, and new fares apply from 1 January 2027.

How to buy

Buy tickets in the MVV or MVGO app, or at blue ticket machines on platforms and at bus and tram stops. Machines accept bank cards.

Paper tickets must be stamped in the validator before you travel. There are no gates, but inspectors check regularly.

Tips for travellers

S1 and S8 alternate between the airport and the city every 10 minutes. The trip to Marienplatz or Hauptbahnhof takes about 35–45 minutes. Some machines near the airport do not sell airport tickets directly, so choose 'Flughafen' as your destination.

During Oktoberfest and big football matches, trains to Theresienwiese and Fröttmaning are very crowded. Allow extra time.

The central S-Bahn tunnel sometimes closes at weekends for works. Check the MVV app before travelling to the airport.

Last checked: October 2026. Fares and timetables change, so confirm on the official website before you travel.
