Routes and stations
Five U-Bahn lines cover the city. Stephansplatz (U1, U3) is in the heart of the old town. Karlsplatz links U1, U2 and U4. Schönbrunn Palace is on U4, and the Prater on U1 and U2 at Praterstern.
Trams circle the Ringstrasse and reach many sights. Wien Hauptbahnhof (U1) is the main railway station for international trains.
Tickets and fares
From 1 January 2026 a single ticket costs €3.00 when bought digitally, with a reduced ticket for children and young people. The 24-hour ticket costs €9.70 and the 7-day ticket €25.20. The 48-hour and 72-hour tickets were discontinued.
A Vienna ticket covers the city limits only. The airport lies outside the city, so trains to the airport need an extra ticket for that section, or a combined ÖBB ticket.
Children under 6 travel free. Check wienerlinien.at for current prices, as paper tickets can cost a little more than digital ones.
How to buy
Buy tickets in the WienMobil app, at machines in U-Bahn stations, or at tobacconists (Trafik). Paper tickets must be stamped in the blue validators before you travel.
There are no gates. Inspectors check tickets and fines are high.
Tips for travellers
From 7 September 2026 until the end of October 2027 the S-Bahn tunnel between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is closed, and trains skip Wien Mitte. The City Airport Train runs as a premium bus to Wien Mitte/Landstraße in about 21 minutes, up to five times an hour.
ÖBB Railjet and Intercity trains run twice an hour non-stop from the airport to Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes. REX 7 also reaches Hauptbahnhof in about 20 minutes. Vienna Airport Bus lines run to Schwedenplatz, Hauptbahnhof, Westbahnhof, Karlsplatz and Praterstern.
Allow extra time and check your connection before you leave, as timetables change during the works.
