Rome Metro & ATAC

Rome's buses, trams and three metro lines are run by ATAC. The metro is small because the city sits on ancient ruins, but it reaches the Vatican, Termini, the Spanish Steps and now the Colosseum on two lines. One ticket works on all ATAC transport in the city.

Routes and stations

Line A crosses the city from north-west to south-east and serves the Vatican area (Ottaviano), Spagna for the Spanish Steps, and Termini. Line B runs through Termini to the Colosseo station, and its branch B1 serves the north-east.

Line C opened two new stations in December 2025, Porta Metronia and Colosseo–Fori Imperiali, so it now links with line B at the Colosseum. Lines A and B meet at Termini.

Buses and trams fill the gaps, especially in the historic centre where there is no metro.

Tickets and fares

The BIT ticket costs €1.50 and is valid for 100 minutes on buses and trams, but only one entry to the metro. The 24, 48 and 72-hour Roma tickets cost €8.50, €15 and €22, and the CIS weekly ticket €29.

With tap&go you simply touch a contactless Visa, Mastercard, American Express or a phone at the gate or on-board validator. Each tap buys a 100-minute BIT. After several trips in 24 hours the charge is capped at the price of the 24-hour ticket. Use the same card or phone for every tap, and each traveller needs their own card.

Fares change from time to time, so check atac.roma.it before you travel.

How to buy

Buy tickets at machines in metro stations, at tobacconists (tabacchi) and newsstands, or in the ATAC Roma app. Validate paper tickets the first time you board.

For the Leonardo Express and FL1 trains, buy a Trenitalia ticket at the airport station machines or in the Trenitalia app. The ATAC 24h and multi-day tickets are not valid on the Leonardo Express.

Tips for travellers

From Fiumicino, the Leonardo Express goes non-stop to Termini in about 32 minutes. The cheaper FL1 train stops at Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina. Airport buses cost about €5 to €7 but take longer in traffic.

The metro runs from about 5:30 until about 23:30 on most nights, later on Saturdays. Check for strikes (sciopero), which are common and announced in advance on the ATAC site.

Watch for pickpockets on line A and on bus 64 to the Vatican. ATAC never sends SMS messages about tap&go payments, so ignore such texts.

Last checked: October 2026. Fares and timetables change, so confirm on the official website before you travel.
