Budapest Metro & BKK

BKK organises Budapest's four metro lines, trams, buses and trolleybuses. The M1 line is the oldest metro on the European mainland, and tram 2 along the Danube is a sightseeing ride in itself. The 100E express bus links the airport with the city centre.

Routes and stations

Deák Ferenc tér is the main hub where M1, M2 and M3 meet. M1 runs under Andrássy Avenue to Heroes' Square and the Széchenyi Baths. M2 crosses the Danube to Batthyány tér, below Buda Castle. M4 links Keleti station with Kálvin tér and the Gellért area.

Tram 2 runs along the Pest bank of the Danube past Parliament, and trams 4 and 6 run around the Grand Boulevard, all night.

Tickets and fares

A single ticket costs about 500 HUF and covers one journey without changing lines. If you change, you need a new ticket, so travel cards are better value for visitors.

The 24-hour travel card costs about 2,750 HUF and the 72-hour card about 5,750 HUF. Passengers under 14 and over 65 travel free.

Normal tickets and travel cards are not valid on the 100E airport bus. It needs its own ticket at 2,500 HUF, or a 1,000 HUF supplement if you hold a Budapest pass.

How to buy

The BudapestGO app sells all tickets and passes. You activate them in the app and show the QR code or scan it when boarding buses.

Purple ticket machines at metro stations and many stops accept cash and cards. Validate paper tickets in the machines before you travel.

Tips for travellers

Bus 100E runs from Liszt Ferenc Airport to Deák Ferenc tér day and night, every few minutes at busy times. The trip takes about 35–45 minutes, depending on traffic.

A cheaper option is bus 200E to Kőbánya-Kispest and then metro M3 to the centre with ordinary tickets, in about 50 minutes.

Inspectors are common at metro entrances. Keep your ticket or app pass ready.

Last checked: October 2026. Fares and timetables change, so confirm on the official website before you travel.
