Routes and stations
SJ's high-speed X2000 trains run Stockholm–Gothenburg and Stockholm–Malmö, with many trains continuing over the Öresund Bridge to Copenhagen. Other routes go north to Sundsvall and west to Karlstad, plus a seasonal train to Strömstad.
Stockholm to Gothenburg takes about 3 hours and Stockholm to Malmö about 4 hours 30 minutes. Stockholm Central is the main station in the capital.
Direct Copenhagen–Stockholm X2000 trains were suspended in 2026 because of a shortage of trains. Travellers change at Malmö Central. Some direct trains may return from 13 December 2026, so check sj.se.
Tickets and fares
Fares follow demand. Early tickets are cheapest, for example Copenhagen–Stockholm from about 254 SEK (about €28). Prices rise as the travel date gets closer and cheap seats sell out.
There are two classes. In 1st class you get free tea and coffee, and you can pre-order a meal to your seat. Flexible 1st-class tickets on trains before 09:00 include breakfast.
Ticket conditions vary: cheaper tickets have fewer change and refund options. Read the rules before paying.
How to book
Book on sj.se in English or in the SJ app. Only sj.se lets you choose your seat from a seat map, which helps families sit together.
Tickets are also sold by Omio and other sites. A seat reservation is compulsory on X2000 trains and is part of the ticket.
Keep the ticket on your phone. Inspectors scan it on board.
Tips for travellers
Every X2000 has a self-service bistro with hot food, snacks and drinks. You can also bring your own food.
Book early for Friday and Sunday trains and Swedish holidays, when trains fill.
For Copenhagen, allow time for the change at Malmö while direct trains are reduced.
Last checked: October 2026. Fares and timetables change, so confirm on the official website before you travel.
